AI technology has been growing at a rapid rate in recent years. Advances in computer hardware and software and the availability of vast amounts of data have fueled the emergence of highly effective artificially intelligent machines. With AI being a hot topic everywhere and now being used in different industries, one might wonder about its effect - will it ever replace working individuals?

Our answer is no; AI cannot replace digital marketers. While AI has become increasingly prevalent in the field of digital marketing, it cannot substitute human employees - below are five reasons why:

  1. It lacks creativity and emotional intelligence: AI lacks creativity and emotional intelligence, two essential qualities for marketing. Marketing requires creativity to develop unique and compelling campaigns that resonate with audiences emotionally. Furthermore, understanding customer emotions and behavior requires empathy and emotional intelligence, qualities AI cannot replicate.

  2. There’s little room for adaptability: AI can perform specific tasks within a predefined set of parameters. In contrast, humans are adaptable and can handle new and unexpected situations. Marketing campaigns often require flexibility and adaptability to adjust to changes in customer behavior, market conditions, and client requests. AI is not capable of handling unforeseen and sudden changes.

  3. It’s not capable of strategic thinking: Digital marketing requires strategic thinking and decision-making. While AI can analyze large amounts of data to help inform new marketing strategies, it cannot replace human intuition and experience in developing innovative solutions beyond the data.

  4. It can’t replicate human connection: Client and customer relationships are paramount in effective digital marketing. Humans are better at communication, negotiation, and relationship-building than the algorithms of AI communication. Developing trust and rapport with clients requires emotional intelligence, authenticity, and an understanding of human behavior that AI does not possess.

  5. It has little regard for ethical considerations: Digital marketing workers must adhere to ethical guidelines and standards. Ethical considerations such as fairness, privacy, honesty, consumer concerns, and transparency require human judgment and oversight. Human digital marketers also know and understand better what is happening with current events, which might need to affect changes in a marketing plan. AI simply does not have values and principles that guide moral decision-making.

We digital marketers have something AI can never have: humanity - and in the service of fellow humans, we are the ones who can understand and connect with each other the most; therefore, we will always be better and ahead of any algorithm designed to pretend to understand or know.

AI cannot replace digital marketers, but it is transforming the way agencies and digital marketing employees (and other industries) operate. Instead of fearing the rise of AI's ubiquity, digital marketers can use AI technology as a tool to strengthen and evolve marketing skills and efficacy. Some ways of leveraging AI to improve digital marketing include using chatbots, ad optimization, predictive analytics, data capture technology, customer data analysis, and content suggestion generation.
